Synopsis Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!
At the Red Mars 2 Project habitat near LA, A space suited figure enters a tunnel and proceeds to a room. The figure draws a knife and pries open a case belonging to one of the sleeping residents. Judy Mason, the figure, takes an apple out of the locker and eats it and another suited figure comes up behind her and kills her with a knife. At the station, Chloe is looking around when Ella finds her. Chloe tells Ella that she's looking for Lucifer, and Ella figures that she's suffering from delusions and hugs her. The detective insists that Lucifer is really back, and Ella points out that she hasn't gotten any text or messages from him. Chloe insists that Lucifer had a good reason for leaving suddenly and suggests that Ella cut him some slack. Ella reluctantly agrees, insisting that she doesn't find Lucifer attractive the way Chloe does.
At the penthouse, the being posing as Lucifer practices his imposture in front of a mirror. The being focuses on fooling Chloe.
At the habitat, the police examine the crime scene. Ella confirms that she was a biochemist and the commander of the habitat. Anders Brody owns the company running the simulation, and Ella notes that Judy was the only scientist while the other five participants were civilians who paid a lot of money to have spots. There are bloody footprints and a hair stuck in one of them, and Ella points out that no one is allowed out of the habitat dome so it must have been one of the five others. The footage from the surveillance cameras has already been wiped.
A smiling "Lucifer" comes in and greets Chloe, and Ella irritably hits him and complains he ran off without saying anything to her. At a secret signal from Chloe, "Lucifer" plays along with the cover story that he went to Florida. Ella can't stay mad at him and hugs him, and once she leaves Chloe talks to him in private. She points out that "Lucifer" just lied to him, but he never lies. "Lucifer" says that he's changed in the thousands of years since he's been gone from his perspective.
Dan joins them, none too thrilled to see that "Lucifer" is back. "Lucifer" demonstrates his new ability to lie, complimenting Dan, and offers hi hand. A surprised Dan shakes it, while a bemused Chloe looks on.
Later, Chloe goes to Linda's office and tells her that "Lucifer" is back. The detective insists that she's happy at his return, but Linda figures that something is wrong. Chloe says that "Lucifer" is acting different, and not-so-convincingly says that it has nothing to do with the fact that she told him she loved him before he left but he didn't say it back. She notes that Lucifer used her name before he left, and Linda suggests that it's probably because "Lucifer" has been in Hell for thousands of years for him.
Chloe hesitantly agrees and wonders if he's lying, and Linda notes that's something they know "Lucifer" never does. The detective says that now "Lucifer" does, and Linda assures Chloe that whatever "Lucifer" is going through, it has nothing to do with his feelings for Chloe and probably just needs time to adjust. Chloe figures she just needs to remind "Lucifer" of who he was, just like Linda supposedly said.
Later at the station, Chloe brief "Lucifer" on their newest case. They question one of the participants, Jane Everly, and "Lucifer" accuses her of hating Judy. Everly admits that she didn't like Judy, and Chloe tries to provoke "Lucifer" into exposing Everly's desire. "Lucifer" has no idea what Chloe is talking about, and they continue talking to the other participants. Richie Ellison points out that Judy bugged out about his microdosing, and Chloe reminds "Lucifer" that he left his flask at her desk.
Benjamin Wu, another participant, vaguely says that Judy didn't bother him. Chloe angrily accuses him of lying, and Wu vaguely says that he isn't. "Lucifer" calms Chloe down. The next participants, Sharon Osbourne, says that Judy was a party pooper and spoiled the ending of the five books they had. "Lucifer" apologizes for his partner's unprofessional behavior, and Osbourne thanks him for everything he did for her husband.
The last participant, Venus Hyatt, insists that she liked Judy. She says that everyone liked Judy, particularly the guys, and talks about her own knowledge of science. She uses sexual innuendo, and Chloe is surprised when "Lucifer" doesn't respond in kind. They all insist that they didn't kill Judy. Afterward, "Lucifer" complains to Chloe that the interrogations got them nowhere. Chloe wonders if he's okay, and asks if he wants to do something impulsive and inappropriate. She tries to get "Lucifer" to eat Dan's pudding, and "Lucifer" gives it to Dan as Dan comes by. Dan wonders what "Lucifer"'s game is, and "Lucifer" insists that he's not up to anything. The detective figures that "Lucifer" spit in it and walks off.
Ella tells "Lucifer" and Chloe that the hair came from outside the dome, and "Lucifer" suggests that they talk to the people running the program. Ella is thrilled to have "Lucifer" back, Chloe not so much.
The partners talk to Sam Chavez, the head of operations, at the mission control room. He says that no one came into the dome and all maintenance is done on site so even repairmen don't come in. Chavez's assistant, Mandy, tells them that they're less concerned about equipment breaking down than the participants. Mandy explains that they're testing the psychological implications of isolation on the participants, and how the experience changes a person. Chavez tells them that he went through Red 1 and is never sure if he'll be the same.
"Lucifer" remembers that someone said Judy was loud on the phone, and wonders if she was arguing with someone at home. Mandy reports that the satcoms were only connected to mission control, and Chavez reminds Mandy that Judy had issues with Donovan Glover. Glover is an aerospace engineer who got pisses when Judy was promoted over him. When he protested to Brody, Brody fires Glover.
As "Lucifer" and Chloe leave, "Lucifer" figures that Chloe is concerned that he changed. He says that he has, but assures Chloe that his feelings for her haven't. "Lucifer" asks her to give him a little more time, and Chloe immediately agrees.
That night, "Lucifer" goes to the penthouse and pours himself a drink. He looks at the ruined piano, and Maze tackles him to the floor and asks how he could go to Hell without her. "Lucifer" says that he's not Lucifer, and Maze releases him from her choke hold. Maze realizes that "Lucifer" is Lucifer's twin brother, Michael, and Michael realizes who Maze is.
Michael pours himself a drink and Maze wonders if he's who he says. She draws her knives, and Michael sprouts his black angel wings and points out that they don't look like Lucifer's wings. Convinced, Maze asks what Michael is doing there. Michael says that he's there to right a serious wrong, and he learned from Gabriel that Lucifer went back to Hell voluntarily. The angel wonders if Lucifer has grown, but he says that he's pissed because Lucifer got praise for doing what he's supposed to. Michael figures that Lucifer is just doing smoke and mirrors to fool someone, and will come up to Earth when he hears someone is "playing with his toys" and maybe even breaking a few.
Maze says that Michael is the only one trying to fool people and sarcastically wishes him luck. She figures Chloe will eventually see through Michael's impersonation, and Michael says that he'll just up his game until she's convinced and then break her heart. Michael tells Maze that he knows a lot of things about humans, and Maze wonders why Michael thinks she'll let him get away with his plan. He says that he knows things, and invites her to join him and then she can kick the real Lucifer's ass.
At Lux, Michael still posing as Lucifer greets Amenadiel as "brother". Amenadiel is surprised to see Lucifer there, and Michael claims that he got bored and came back up from Hell. He says that no one is watching Hell but the demons have promised to be good. Michael suggests that Amenadiel is afraid of demons taking Charlie, and insists that the demons are in line.
Later, Chloe and Michael go to Glover's most recent address. When Michael banters, Chloe chuckles and says that "Lucifer" seems more like his regular self. Glover walks down the street, and Michael spots him and calls to him. Glover gets into his car and drives off, even when Chloe identifies herself as LAPD, and she drives off after him. She finally cuts Glover off, and she and Michael confront Glover. Chloe draws her gun and tells Glover to get out, but he drives at them instead. She grazes Glover through the windshield, and Michael flies her over the oncoming car, sprouting his wings.
The partners take Glover to the station, and he claims that he thought they were repo men. Glover admits that he was angry at Brody because he gave the promotion to Judy, and is surprised to learn that Judy is dead. He gives them an alibi. Grover also says that Brody blacklisted him and would punish him further if he hurt "Brody's" Judy. He tells the partners that Brody and Judy were having an affair, and that's why she got the job over Glover. The partners agree that they have to talk to Brody.
Later, Dan approaches Michael in the squad room and figures that he's doing something because he's doing nothing. Chloe joins them and says that Brody is on a sub-orbital test until the next day, and Chloe and Michael have the rest of the evening free. Michael says that he'll go home to get some dinner and quickly leaves. Chloe asks Dan if that was an invitation, and Dan has no idea.
Chloe goes to the penthouse with takeout. Michael is kissing Maze, and Chloe drops the takeout bag and gets in the elevator. Michael gets in with her, and she tells him to leave her alone. Lucifer's twin brother claimed that while in Hell, he got lost in who he used to be. He claims that when he saw Maze, Hell came rushing back. Michael insists that Chloe is the only thing who matters to her, and Chloe wonders if she knows how he's lying. He tells her that he would never lie to her, but Chloe tells him that she needs to think and goes when the elevator reaches the ground floor, and Michael smirks in triumph at having broken her heart.
After his return, Brody gives a press conference. Chloe arrives with Michael chasing after her, and she refuses to discuss their relationship with him. They push their way to the front of the press, and Brody remembers Michael as "Lucifer", the one who helped him get forgiveness. Michael plays along and Brody hugs him, and Chloe flashes her badge to identify herself.
In a nearby hangar, the partners talk to Brody. He says that he's devastated by Judy's death and Chloe tells him that they know Brody and Judy were having an affair. Chloe points out that no one has more motive for Judy's murder than Brody, and as Brody gets in his car Chloe whispers to Michael that he do his desire-revealing thing. Michael uses his ability to determine what Brody fears, and Brody says that he's afraid people will find out that he hates space. He tells the partner that he only started the Mars project as a publicity stunt, and Judy found out his act was a sham when she was in the dome. Judy threatened to tell everyone, but he talked her down and had they made up. Brody insists that he had no motive, and he has an alibi for the night of Judy's murder. However, no one can corroborate his alibi.
Brody lawyers up and leaves, and Chloe calls Dan and tells her what happened. She then says that Michael asking Brody what he feared helped her understand "Lucifer"'s time in Hell, and that it would be strange if "Lucifer" hadn't changed. Chloe says that it's time she accept that, and tells a surprised Michael that she'll see him later.
Linda goes to Lux and meets with Amenadiel, who is keeping an eye on Charlie. He says that the best place for Charlie is being held by him, and admits he hasn't put Charlie down for about 16 hours. Amenadiel refuses to give Linda their son, and says that "Lucifer" is back and not watching the demons. Linda figures "Lucifer" wouldn't come back unless things were under control, and Amenadiel agrees since that's what Lucifer said and Lucifer never lies. He picks up on Linda's hesitation, and she tells Amenadiel that Chloe told her that now Lucifer lies. They agree that "Lucifer" wouldn't lie about the demons, and Linda takes the baby from a hesitant Amenadiel.
At the station, Maze confronts Chloe and asks if she's freaking out about seeing her and "Lucifer" together. Chloe figures that Maze is trying to apologize, and says that she knows Maze is in a vulnerable place. She figures "Lucifer" is desperate for love and affection, and she wants to be the one there for him in every way. Chloe suggests that it's time for her and "Lucifer" to take their relationship to the next level, much to Maze's surprise.
Ella is in her lab dozing at her microscope. Michael and Chloe are there, and Ella wakes up and insists that she wasn't sleeping. The partners go to get some coffee, and Chloe makes eyes at Michael. She flirts with him and checks his pocket for change for the vending machine. Chloe then tells Michael that sometimes change sis a good thing and she likes the new "Lucifer". She says that maybe it's time for them to move forward together, and suggests that she come over to his place after they solve the case. A puzzled Michael agrees and Chloe looks at the reflection of the two of them in the vending machine glass.
Chloe gets an idea from the reflection and goes back to her office. Linda arrives and asks who is watching Hell. Michael casually dismisses her concern, but Linda wants more given the last time Hell was unattended, demons came for Charlie. She insists that she needs to keep Charlie safe, and Michael realizes that Linda is also afraid of being a bad mother... and she has a good reason for that. Michael tells Linda that Hell is being looked after, and mutters to himself that he might let it stay that way as he looks after Chloe.
As Michael goes back to the lab, Chloe has Ella bring up the surveillance footage. They spot a reflection of the killer, but the reflection doesn't show the killer's face. None of the project suits have a visible oxygen tube like the killer's old suit. Chloe has an idea of where the old suit came from, and takes Michael with her to a house.
No one answers Chloe's knock, and Michael breaks in. Chloe goes with him inside, and as they search the place someone shoots a shotgun through an internal door. Michael pushes Chloe out of the way, and as they take cover Chloe calls to Chavez, figuring he's the shooter. Chavez lowers his gun and apologizes, and Chloe arrests him for Judy's murder. He says that Brody killed Judy and he thought they were him, and that's why he shot. Chavez says that Judy found out the project was Brody's publicity stunt, and she told him and they worked together to find evidence to take to the press. However, Chavez claims that Judy was too emotionally invested with Brody and confronted him despite Chavez's advice.
Chavez didn't tell them because he thought Brody would come after him next. Michael notes that all of the evidence points to Chavez as the killer, and Chloe notes that Chavez was the only person who could have wiped the video. He has the older spacesuit from the Red 1 simulation, and the rug on Chavez's floor matches the hair Ella found at the crime scene. Chavez agrees and says that he'll go with them.
Mandy comes out with a knife and says that she killed Judy rather than Chavez. Chloe reaims her gun, and Mandy says that the knife is the murder weapon and proof that she killed Judy, not Chavez. Chavez is shocked that Mandy killed Judy, and says that he was talking to Judy to work to expose the PR stunt. He didn't tell Mandy because he was trying to keep her safe, and Mandy talks about how she thought Chavez didn't love her because he was away for so long on the Red 1. Chavez assures her that nothing would change his feelings toward her, and Mandy hugs him as Chloe handcuffs her.
Later at the penthouse, Maze comes to see Michael. She tells him that she won't let Michael have sex with Chloe, insisting Chloe is a good person and doesn't deserve what Michael is going to put her through. Michael tells Maze that he's changed his mind and so has Chloe, and she likes the new "Lucifer" better than the old. He's decided that he's going to take Lucifer's life rather than break it.
As he goes, Michael grabs Maze and chokes her unconscious. He says that he has a date to keep and hauls her to the bedroom. Chloe comes in from the elevator, and Michael comes out of the bedroom and greets her. She says that she meant everything she said the last time they were there together, and that she loves "Lucifer" and still does. Michael tells her that he loves her and Chloe takes off her coat, embraces Michael, and says that she still has the necklace on. Chloe warns that things will never be the same once they have sex, then draws her gun and shoots Michael in the leg.
Michael is unwounded, and Chloe realizes that means he's not Lucifer since she can hurt him. She explains that she knew something was off the first time she kissed Michael, and she wanted to believe Michael's lies. When Chloe saw Michael with Maze, she knew Michel was a fraud because Lucifer would never do that to Chloe.
Chloe asks who Michael is, and he reverts to his normal accent and says that he's Lucifer's brother. She shoots him repeatedly in the chest, saying that it makes her feel better even if won't kill Michael, and tells Michael that he's no Lucifer. Chloe says her fears of Lucifer changing were just fears, and what she and Lucifer have are special. When Chloe says that she'll never lose faith in the two of them, Michael tells her that Chloe is a gift from God. She was never supposed to exist, and God made her only for Lucifer to be his plaything.
When Chloe says that she doesn't believe Michael, she tells him to get out. Michael leaves and Chloe turns away, shocked.
Michael goes down to Lux and drinks. Amenadiel approaches him and calls Michael by name, and tells Michael that he shouldn't have used fear to get into his head because it was too obvious. The angel wonders if God knows that Michael is there, and Michael tells Amenadiel that he does what he wants. Amenadiel tells Michael to go home because he doesn't belong there, and Michael threatens to tell Remy because Charlie doesn't belong there. Unimpressed, Amenadiel tells Michael to go home. Michael says that Lucifer's life sucks anyway, but Amenadiel doesn't believe his sour grapes. He says that they've always known Michael's fear: he's terrified that Lucifer is better than him and always will be.
When Michael denies it, Amenadiel tells him that deep down, Michael will always know that Lucifer will end up winning even though Lucifer was cast down. Michael says that they'll see and disappears into the dance floor crowd.
Maze wakes up to find herself handcuffed in Lucifer's bedroom. She easily breaks herself free.
Linda sits at home and looks at a photo of her from 1994 holding a baby, and cries.
Chloe stands at the penthouse balcony, looks out on the city, and kisses the necklace Lucifer gave her.
In Hell, Amenadiel visits Lucifer and tells him that it's time for him to come back to Earth. Lucifer wonders what has happened.
